Christianity stands or falls with its revolutionary protest against violence, arbitrariness, and pride of power and with its apologia for the weak.” Bonhoeffer

Arise God

Today, we cannot seem to find you.
You seem very distant indeed.
We who are poor and without hope,
we feel abandoned.
Where are you already?

Look, the exploiters, the rich
they break our bones,
we who are poor and without hope,
and then break our hearts,
and stomp on them, for fun.

Damn their right hands and their left.

Arise, God.
Draw nearer, at least.

The ground under my feet is solid.
The mountain is still majestic.
My heart still beats.

You’ve heard our cries before.
For justice. For an end to war.
For the bombs to stop falling.
For a job for each one, for everyone.
A stop to the terror.
Too many tears. Too many indignities.

With your help, but through our hands,
we’ll build a new way. We’ll melt down the guns.
We’ll disassemble the bombs.

We’ll burn down Wall Street.
So they’ll terrify us no more.

Arise o God of justice and peace,
through us and in us.
