We live in the in-between

We live in the in-between and we live in the not quite yet.
We live in the grey and with full awareness of the uncertainties at every turn.
Oh, how we long for the sure bet, the guarantees, the absolute.
And life smiles.
And God, if such a one exists, smiles.

The smiles are loving and kind.
Never mean, never distant.
The smiles are like the hug of one who loves you.

So we pray for a smile in the midst of this time.
So we pray for laughter in the midst of the in-between time.
So we pray for compassion — for ourselves and others — in the grey zone.

Amidst all of the unknowing, amidst all of the uncertainty,
we keep going in love and kindness.
Keep us, God of the in-betweens, in your heart,
so we can keep all of creation in our hearts.
